Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is celebrated all over the world every year on the 14th of February. It is a special day to celebrate love and affection. Valentine's Day is not a national holiday in the UK, so schools, offices, and government buildings are open on Valentine's Day. People usually give cards, letters, or gifts to the people that they love. People also exchange chocolates and flowers. Some couples go out on dates or take a romantic trip to celebrate this day. Nowadays, it is a very commercial holiday. Shops start selling chocolate boxes, heart-shaped objects like cushions, flowers, and other types of gifts only days after Christmas has finished.

This celebration actually comes from St. Valentine, who was a Roman priest who lived during the 3rd Century. The emperor Claudius II thought that men without wives and children were better soldiers, so he decided that young men could not get married, and this way, they would be better soldiers. Valentine thought that this was wrong, so he continued to marry young couples in secret. However, Claudius II found out about what he was doing, so he was killed.

We don't really know why it is celebrated on the 14th of February. Some people say that Valentine might have died in the middle of February, but others believe that it is because of another Roman celebration called Lupercalia, which was celebrated on the 15th of February. In this tradition, members of the Luperci, who were Roman priests, would go to a cave where they thought that the babies Romulus and Remus, who were the founders of Rome, were looked after by a wolf or Lupa. At this cave, the priests killed or sacrificed a goat and a dog so that the women would be more fertile the next year. They also did this to make the land more fertile too so that they would have enough food the following year. After they sacrificed a goat and a dog, the ladies put their names in a big pod. The young male Romans took a name from the pot, and the man and the woman became a couple. These couples often married, so this could be one of the reasons why Valentine's Day is celebrated on the 14th of February.

Although Valentine's Day is a well-known celebration all over the world, in the UK only 59% of people who are in relationships are going to celebrate it this year. Romantic dinners are going to be the most popular way to celebrate this year. 43% of the people who are going to celebrate it are planning to celebrate it this way. 43% is quite high compared to the percentage of people who are going to have dinner out at a restaurant. Only 29% are going to go out on a date and have dinner with their partner, and the least popular option this year is to go on a romantic trip. Only 14% of those who are going to celebrate Valentine's Day are going to go on holiday.

The main reason why a lot of people don't celebrate Valentine's Day is because they think that it is too commercial. People believe that the only reason why Valentine's Day is so popular is that the shops want to sell a lot of products to make money. So they believe that it is a waste of money and that you should show your love every day, not only once a year. Other reasons for not celebrating are believing that it is too old-fashioned or because it is too expensive. Like we said before, romantic dinners at home are going to be the preferred option on Valentine's Day this year. This is probably because of the cost of living crisis. Rent, food, and bills like water, gas, or electricity have gone up so much that people can't afford to go on special dates at a restaurant. Instead of buying gifts and spending a lot of money at a restaurant, they are going to have a romantic date night with their partner with a home-bake meal or a takeaway.

Having a takeaway is much cheaper because you don't have to buy drinks. Alcohol is quite expensive in England, and a pint of beer costs around £5.90. That means that if the two of you have a pint of beer at a bar, a pub, or a restaurant, that would be more than £10. So by having a home-baked meal or a takeaway at home, you would be saving that amount of money, which is a lot. A date night in can also make you feel special but at a lower cost.
